  • News Report: Atiku, Obi Form Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections

In a major political development ahead of the #2027GeneralElections, former Vice President #AtikuAbubakar has reportedly offered a vice-presidential slot to 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, #PeterObi, as part of a proposed #one-termjointticket.

According to sources, the two prominent opposition figures recently held a strategic meeting in the #UnitedKingdom, where the idea of a #coalition was first discussed. It was during this meeting that Atiku allegedly mooted the idea of teaming up with Obi, offering him the position of #runningmate.

In a significant move that could reshape the 2027 political landscape, Peter Obi has accepted the offer to be Atiku’s running mate. As part of the arrangement, Atiku has agreed to serve only a single four-year term,, after which he would hand over the presidency to Obi.

This alliance, if formally confirmed, could signal a major shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics and pose a formidable challenge to the ruling party in the upcoming elections.

Political observers are closely watching how this proposed #Atiku-ObiTicket will be received by their respective parties and supporters, with many already speculating on the potential impact of such a high-profile alliance. #nigerianews #latestnews #politics #nigeriapolitics

  • Delays, Cancellations, Long Queues: Doctor Scarcity Hits Nigeria’s Private Hospitals

Nigeria's private #healthcare sector is grappling with a severe shortage of #doctors, leading to long wait times, appointment delays, and increased patient frustration. Once considered a reliable alternative to the country's under-resourced public #hospitals, private facilities are now facing similar challenges, with #patients experiencing prolonged delays and difficulty accessing medical care.

The crisis is most acute in rural areas, where some states have fewer than 300 doctors in total. In urban centers, remaining healthcare #workers are overburdened, with many seeing over 30 patients daily and covering multiple shifts due to staff shortages.

This shortage is largely attributed to the "#Japa" phenomenon, where #Nigerian doctors emigrate in search of better #opportunities #abroad. Over the past five to seven years, more than 16,000 #medical professionals have left the country, leaving the doctor-to-population ratio at a mere 3.9 per 10,000 individuals.

The situation is further exacerbated by economic hardships. Operational costs for private hospitals have skyrocketed, with #energy and imported medical consumables increasing by up to 500%. Consequently, approximately 50% of private hospitals have shut down, while existing ones struggle to survive.

Healthcare professionals warn that unless urgent steps are taken to improve working conditions, compensation, and #job security, the mass exodus of trained #professionals will continue, with devastating consequences for healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The Nigerian #government has introduced the National Policy on Health Workforce #Migration to address the brain drain of doctors. However, critics argue that the policy lacks actionable implementation and fails to provide incentives for #doctors to specialize in key medical fields.

As the healthcare system continues to deteriorate, patients are left with limited options, often resorting to self-medication or local remedies due to financial constraints and lack of access to medical professionals.

The ongoing doctor scarcity in Nigeria's private hospitals underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to retain medical professionals and ensure accessible, quality healthcare for all #citizens. #nigeria #nigerianews #latestnews

  • BREAKING: North-West #APC Endorses #Tinubu for Continuity in 2027

In a major political development, the North-West zone of the All Progressives Congress (#APC) has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, setting the stage for what could be a highly anticipated 2027 general election.

The endorsement came after a high-level meeting held in Kaduna State, where party stakeholders, including governors, ministers, senators, and party leaders from the seven North-West states, unanimously declared their support for Tinubu’s continuity in office beyond 2027.

According to insiders at the meeting, the move was motivated by what they described as Tinubu’s “#bold reforms, stabilizing leadership, and commitment to national development.”

Speaking at the gathering, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State said, “President Tinubu has shown resilience and capacity to lead Nigeria through tough economic and security challenges. The North-West stands solidly behind him for 2027.”

The North-West region, which comprises Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara States, holds significant political weight due to its large voting population. Political analysts believe this early endorsement could boost Tinubu’s 2027 ambition and send a clear signal to other contenders.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians praising the show of unity within the ruling party, while others questioned the timing of such a move, given the country’s ongoing economic hardship.

Meanwhile, opposition parties are expected to respond in the coming days, as the endorsement marks the first major 2027 declaration from any geopolitical zone.

This latest development positions #Tinubu as the early frontrunner for the next presidential election and confirms that the ruling party is already setting its sights on the future.

  • Nigeria's inflation rate eased to 23.71%

Nigeria #inflation in April 2025, down from 24.23% in March, according to the #National #Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This marks a continued decline from the 34.80% peak recorded in December 2024, following a rebasing of the Consumer Price #Index (CPI) that updated the base year and adjusted the inflation basket.

The #moderation in #inflation is largely attributed to a decrease in food prices, with food inflation dropping to 21.26% in April from 21.79% in March. This decline is linked to reduced prices of staple food items such as #maize flour, wheat grain, dried okro, yam flour, soya beans, rice, bambara beans, and brown beans.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile #agricultural produce and energy, also declined to 23.39% year-on-year in April, down from 26.84% in April 2024. On a month-on-month basis, core inflation stood at 1.34%, a decrease from 3.73% in March.

#Urban inflation was reported at 24.29% year-on-year in April, a significant drop from 36.00% in April 2024. Month-on-month, urban inflation decreased to 1.18% in April from 3.96% in March. #Rural inflation also saw a decline, standing at 22.83% year-on-year in April compared to 31.64% in April 2024. On a month-on-month basis, rural inflation was 3.56% in April, down from 3.73% in March.

  • Fuel Import Ban Fears Re-ignite #Dangote, Marketers’ Row

Tensions have resurfaced between the #Dangote Petroleum Refinery and independent oil marketers over renewed fears of a potential fuel import ban by the Federal Government. The controversy was re-ignited after recent reports hinted that the government may soon halt the importation of refined #petroleum products in favor of locally produced fuel from the 650,000 barrels per day #DangoteRefinery.

This development has sparked concerns among fuel marketers, who fear that a sudden ban could disrupt existing supply chains and threaten their businesses. Industry insiders say some marketers are worried that Dangote’s growing dominance could lead to a monopoly, limiting competition and impacting pump prices nationwide.

While the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (#NMDPRA) has not confirmed any ban, stakeholders say the possibility is creating uncertainty in the downstream sector.

Representatives of independent marketers argue that although they support local refining, the government should ensure a level playing field. “We welcome Dangote’s refinery, but there must be policies that protect all players in the market,” said a senior member of the Independent Petroleum #Marketers Association.

On the other hand, officials close to the #DangoteGroup maintain that the refinery’s entry is a patriotic step toward #energy sufficiency and reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel. “Nigeria cannot continue to export crude and import refined products at a loss. This refinery is built to change that,” an insider said.

As the refinery ramps up its operations, already supplying diesel and aviation fuel, the debate over import bans and market access is expected to intensify. Observers warn that without clear and transparent regulation, the country could face fresh rounds of fuel scarcity or pricing disputes.

The Federal Government is yet to make an official statement, but all eyes are on the Ministry of Petroleum Resources as it prepares to outline the next steps in Nigeria’s fuel supply strategy.

For now, industry watchers remain alert, as any major policy move could reshape the entire #oilandgas landscape in Africa’s largest economy. #DangotePetroleumRefinery #Nigerianews #Nigeria

  • Mass failure: JAMB, VCs to review UTME results Thursday

Following widespread concern over the reported mass failure in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (#UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (#JAMB) has scheduled a high-level meeting with Vice Chancellors (#VCs) of Nigerian universities for Thursday to critically review the outcome of the examination.

The urgent meeting comes in response to public outcry and growing questions about the integrity and effectiveness of the exam process. Many parents, students, and educators have taken to social media to express their disappointment over the low scores recorded across the country.

According to a statement from JAMB's spokesperson, the meeting will involve a comprehensive analysis of the #results, with particular focus on identifying the root causes of the mass failure. Stakeholders are also expected to discuss potential adjustments to the #admissionprocess for the 2025/2026 academic session.

"This is not just about scores; it’s about the future of our educational system," said a university official involved in the review. "We need to determine whether the problem lies in the candidates’ preparation, the exam structure, or technical glitches during the computer-based test."

#Education stakeholders have raised concerns that the mass failure could affect university admissions this year, especially in competitive courses such as #Medicine, #Engineering, and #Law.

Some experts are already calling for a reform of the UTME, suggesting that the board should explore more innovative and student-friendly assessment techniques. Others believe the mass failure is a reflection of deeper issues in the #NigerianEducationSystem, including poor funding, inadequate teaching infrastructure, and limited access to quality learning materials.

The outcome of Thursday’s meeting is expected to influence major decisions, including possible #cutoffmark adjustments, review of examination questions, and policy shifts aimed at improving future UTME performances.

As the nation waits, many students and parents are hoping for transparency and fairness in whatever resolutions are reached. #nigerianews #viralnews

  • Nigeria to Phase Out Electricity Subsidies, Signals Tariff Hike Amid N4 Trillion Debt Crisis

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that the country’s economy can no longer sustain #electricitysubsidies, urging citizens to brace for #costreflectivetariffs. Speaking at a meeting with chairmen of #GeneratingCompanies (GenCos) in Abuja, Adelabu emphasized the need for consumers to pay the true cost of electricity to ensure the sustainability of the #powersector.

The Federal Government currently owes GenCos over #N4trillion in unpaid subsidies, a debt that has crippled the sector and threatened nationwide blackouts. “We have to understand that our economy cannot sustain subsidies indefinitely,” Adelabu stated, highlighting the urgency of addressing the liquidity crisis. The debt, comprising N2 trillion in legacy arrears and N1.9 trillion for 2024, has left GenCos struggling to maintain infrastructure and secure loans.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the real tariff for February 2025 was N116.18 per kilowatt-hour, while consumers paid N88.2 per kilowatt-hour, resulting in a subsidy gap of N27.97 per kilowatt-hour. All customers, except the 15% classified as #BandA, currently benefit from subsidies.

Adelabu assured that the government remains committed to providing #targetedsubsidies for economically disadvantaged Nigerians but stressed that “citizens must pay the appropriate price for the energy consumed.” To address the N4 trillion debt, the government plans to pay a substantial portion in cash immediately, with the balance settled through financial instruments like #promissorynotes within six months. “We recognize the urgency of this matter,” Adelabu said, noting that a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and GenCos’ leadership is planned to finalize the payment strategy.

The minister also called for #powersectorliberalization and collaboration with GenCos to educate Nigerians on efficient electricity use and tariff realities. However, the proposed tariff hike has sparked concerns among consumers, especially following recent grid collapses, with many questioning the reliability of supply amidst rising costs.

This move follows a 35% reduction in electricity subsidies in 2024 after a tariff increase for high-usage consumers, which reduced the government’s tariff shortfall from N3 trillion to N1.9 trillion. As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, the shift to cost-reflective tariffs aims to stabilize the power sector but may place additional financial strain on households.
